Earlier this year, an online clip by an Indian travel influencer complaining about India's weak passport went viral across digital platforms.
The influencer stated although nearby nations like Bhutan and Sri Lanka were more welcoming to Indian tourists, obtaining visas to travel to most Western and European countries remained a challenge.
This dissatisfaction with the limited global access of Indian passports found confirmation in the latest global passport ranking, which placed the country in the 85th spot out of nearly two hundred nations, a decline of five positions compared to the previous year.
Officials in India has not commented on the report yet.
Countries including Ghana, Rwanda and Azerbaijan despite smaller economic size than India โ which is the world's fifth biggest economy โ are ranked higher in the ranking in the seventies range, respectively.
In fact, India's rank over the last ten years has remained around the eighties, even dipping to ninetieth place in 2021. Such standings are dismal when measured against Asian nations like Japan, South Korea and Singapore, all maintaining top positions.
Passport strength indicates a nation's soft power and global influence. It also translates into better mobility for passport holders, improving commercial and educational prospects. Limited passport power results in more paperwork, increased visa expenses, reduced travel benefits and extended processing periods for travel.
However, even with the drop in position, the count of nations providing visa-free travel for Indian citizens has actually increased in the past decade or so.
As an instance, eight years ago โ when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling party came to power โ 52 countries provided visa-free access to Indians with the passport at seventy-sixth position in the ranking.
The following year, it tumbled to the 85th position, then improved to eightieth over the past two years, dropping again to the 85th position this year. At the same time, countries allowing visa-free travel for Indians grew from 52 in 2015 to sixty last year and 62 in 2024.
The number of nations allowing visa-free entry this year (fifty-seven) exceeds what it was in 2015 (52), yet India's rank for both these years is 85. What explains this situation?
Experts say that a primary factor involves growing competition in international travel โ meaning countries are entering into additional travel agreements to benefit their citizens and economic growth. As per a 2025 report, the worldwide mean count of countries travellers are able to access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to one hundred nine currently.
As an illustration, The Chinese passport has increased the number of visa-free destinations its citizens can travel to from fifty to eighty-two in the past decade. Consequently, its rank in the ranking has enhanced from 94th to 60th during the same time period.
Meanwhile, The Indian passport โ which was ranked 77th on the index in July โ dropped to the 85th position this autumn after losing access to two countries.
An ex-diplomat from India says there are other factors that affect the strength of a country's passport, including its economic and political stability plus its receptiveness to accepting travelers from abroad.
For example, the US passport has fallen of the top 10 and now occupies twelfth place โ a historic low โ due to its more inward-looking approach in global affairs.
The diplomat mentioned how in the 1970s, Indians enjoyed visa-free access to many Western and European countries, though this shifted following Sikh separatist movement in the 1980s. Later political disturbances have further chipped away the country's reputation as a stable democracy.
"Many countries are growing more cautious of immigrants," the diplomat added. "India has a large quantity of people migrating overseas or overstaying their visas affecting the country's reputation."
Elements such as how secure of a national passport and immigration processes also play a role to obtaining visa-free access to foreign nations.
India's passport faces ongoing security risks. In 2024, authorities arrested over two hundred individuals for alleged passport and visa irregularities. The country also has cumbersome immigration procedures and a slow pace for visa approvals.
The diplomat says that new technologies, such as the newly introduced electronic passport or e-passport, may enhance safety and streamline immigration. This electronic document contains a small chip holding biometric information, making it harder to forge or tamper with the passport.
But, more diplomatic outreach and travel partnerships remain key to boosting international travel freedom of Indians and consequently, India's passport ranking.
