The Reason PSG Are Embracing Local Players to Retain Their Continental Title

Homegrown players were previously a fairly infrequent sight on Paris St-Germain matchday squads.

Until a few years ago, the club's Qatari ownership was spearheaded by big-money acquisitions from elsewhere.

The Change in Strategy

Some of PSG's prominent youth graduates during those years, such as Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, left Paris before making their mark in the Parisian setup.

The team's embrace of local players in recent seasons has already seen the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue spearhead last year's historic campaign.

Developing Homegrown Talent

Now, PSG are planning to advance their strategy and construct around their academy products, a change that has been precipitated by an early-season injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the injured players, there have been as many as several academy graduates - each hailing from the Paris area - in the matchday squad this season.

Advanced Training Facilities

The club's extensive football campus has been crucial to that strategy.

Previously, PSG moved out of the Camp des Loges to the nearby state-of-the-art PSG Campus.

The modern infrastructure, which were officially inaugurated a last year, host the men's and women's teams along with their development squads over a large area.

These include numerous football grounds, accommodation for 140 young players, educational facilities and even a vegetable garden.

Future Direction

During an ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the academy's opening, technical director Luis Campos clarified that the organization's vision were to incorporate "increasing numbers of players from the local region" in the first team.

"The idea is to have players in all youth categories who can climb the steps the academy," says Campos.

A more defined route from the academy to the senior squad can also relieve the club's reliance on the transfer market, the Portuguese executive emphasized.

For Campos, "frequent shopping regularly doesn't make you a more skilled culinary artist."

"What's important is to be going in the proper course, not to hoard prospects," he continues.

Academy Integration

The ex-Ligue 1 executive also shared details of a session between Luis Enrique and the youth coaches, in which the Spanish manager established his "principles of play" rather than prescribing particular drills or playing systems to follow.

The Asturian's appointment two seasons ago, Campos explains, was particularly supported by "courage to play young talents as soon as they mature."

Emerging Talents

Versus Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who spearheaded the attack and found the net in PSG's impressive 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also involved in the win over the Spanish side, while 17-year-old Mathis Jangeal was on the bench, having broken into the senior setup a short time earlier.

Mayulu, who netted the concluding goal in the Champions League final victory over Inter in May, has been among the promising developments of the revised strategy.

Multi-position Player

The 19-year-old engine room operator, naturally a central operator, notably owes his 50 first-team games to his versatility.

Having started in all domestic matches since the end of September, Mayulu has been positioned throughout the team, from right-back, to middle of the park, to attacking role.

Youth Development Direction

Yohan Cabaye has been the director of the youth system since 2024, having initially joined the development system soon after the conclusion of his professional career.

The former France midfielder commends strongly Mayulu, pointing to the way he recovered from injury several times in his formative years.

"During his early days in the youth system, he was finding it difficult to finish complete years," Cabaye says. "He demonstrated such mental fortitude that he repeatedly recovered, though."

Exceptional Talent

Zaire-Emery, as the former Newcastle man describes him, is an exception.

"He shouldn't be utilized as an standard, if we did you'd have 20 16-year-olds seeking out Luis Enrique's office," he explains.

Now on his fourth season in the senior squad, the emerging talent has been skippering the depleted Parisians from an growing accustomed defensive position.

Return to Form

Following difficulties through periods during last season, the national team player is finding again the explosive form that first saw him break into the professional setup.

Following his recall to the national team in the past few weeks, the capital city-born explained his period with the development squad helped him rediscover his self-belief.

"I've focused on myself, I persisted and worked hard," he pointed out before the game with Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have gained advantages, with Zaire-Emery acting as the standard-bearer once again for the latest academy products of Parisians.

Competitive Landscape

A crucial aspect of maximizing the capital city prospects is fending off approaches by rival teams.

Utilizing professional talent spotters observing development leagues in the Paris region, PSG are aiming to enhance their foothold on the hotbed of talent at their doorstep, from which their domestic and European rivals have long been recruiting players.

Development Triumphs

Should junior competition performances are a reliable guide, PSG will possess numerous talents to advance in the years to come.

The under-19 side won the competition again this past season and have excelled during the continental stage, which has naturally drawn attention from the outside.

"We often have between numerous talent spotters from French and foreign teams coming to our academy matches," Cabaye points out.</
