The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that an element was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
