Arsenal Football Club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will expire in June this upcoming year.
This deal, reportedly valued at around ten million pounds each year, was first established and has since come under fire.
The backlash is due to Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 rebel group in continuing hostilities in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.
Earlier this year, Arsenal faced allegations of issuing a severe rebuff to the Congolese government by failing to convene with the DRC's foreign minister to talk about the deal.
Visit Rwanda functions as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.
It is widely believed that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership mainly to grow their following across the continent.
Nevertheless, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to end their collaboration.
“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have surpassed the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and sustainable tourism, motivating countless fans to visit the nation, and creating a lasting foundation for tourism growth,” declared an Gunners' release.
The release further noted that the partnership has also assisted Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and host more global sporting events while implementing community soccer programs that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches improve their techniques and encourage more involvement in sport across the country.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, portrayed the arrangement as a “important voyage” and asserted it had been “propelling” the club's goals.
However, this perspective was not shared by a section of Arsenal's fanbase, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace holding rallies outside the Emirates Stadium during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against the French club in April's conclusion.
Activists unveiled a banner that read “Drop Visit Rwanda” and handed out sleeves to hide the Visit Rwanda logo on kits.
In the same month, Paris Saint-Germain continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.
Simultaneously, the Madrid-based team inked a recent contract for the same period that has caused the branding featured on the La Liga side's male and female kits.
