Pupils Share Concerns That AI Is Undermining Their Learning Skills, Research Finds

As per new research, students are expressing worries that employing machine intelligence is eroding their ability to study. Numerous report it makes schoolwork “effortless”, while others argue it restricts their creativity and prevents them from learning additional competencies.

Broad Utilization of AI By Learners

A report looking at the usage of AI in United Kingdom learning centers revealed that only 2% of learners aged 13 and 18 stated they did not use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, while 80% said they frequently utilized it.

Negative Impact on Skills

Despite artificial intelligence's prevalence, 62% of the pupils reported it has had a adverse effect on their abilities and growth at their educational institution. 25% of the participants agreed that AI “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.

An additional 12% reported AI “restricts my imaginative processes”, while similar numbers reported they were less prone to address issues or write creatively.

A professional in generative AI remarked that the study was among the first to analyze how young people in the UK were incorporating AI into their learning.

Empirical Studies and Wider Worries

The discoveries align with empirical studies on the utilization of artificial intelligence in education. One study measured brain electrical activity while composition tasks among participants using large language models and found: “The outcomes highlight worries regarding the enduring academic consequences of dependency on AI and emphasize the necessity for further exploration of its educational impact.”

Roughly half of the 2,000 students questioned expressed they were concerned their peers were “secretly using AI” for schoolwork without their instructors being able to detect it.

Desire for Guidance and Favorable Elements

Many participants stated that they sought more help from instructors for the proper utilization of AI and in evaluating whether its responses was trustworthy. A project aimed at supporting teachers with artificial intelligence instruction is being introduced.

“Some of these findings will be very interesting for teachers, especially around how much students are expecting guidance from teachers. Merely 31% reported they didn’t think employing artificial intelligence had a adverse effect on any of their abilities. But, the majority of respondents stated using artificial intelligence assisted them acquire additional competencies, for instance 18% who indicated it assisted them understand problems, and 15% who reported it assisted them generate “new and better” thoughts.

Pupil Perspectives
