Bolsonaro arrested after being declared a flight risk

Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

They also asked that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
